Mantis are fearsome hunters as your capture shows .fortunately they eat many bugs harmful to our crops. I have had them look me straight in the eye and still keep on munching. Stunning capture Adrienne!

Adrienne Wilson replied:

June...I know exactly what you mean. It will just keep eating while it watches you. They are my favorite insect. So much personality. Thank you for the wonderful compliment.

Artist's Description

This Spring I had a Praying Mantis egg capsule hatch and I had tiny, tiny little babies all over my Yellow Bell plant. Over the next couple of months, I carefully watched them grow into mature Praying Mantises.
I captured one of the juveniles enjoying a tasty fly.
Mantises have triangular heads with bulging eyes supported on flexible necks. Their elongated bodies may or may not have wings, but all Mantodea have forelegs that are greatly enlarged and adapted for catching and gripping prey; their upright posture, while remaining stationary with forearms folded, has led to the common name praying mantis.
Mantises were considered to have supernatural powers by early civilizations, including Ancient Greece, Ancient Egypt, and Assyria. A cultural trope popular in cartoons imagines the female mantis as a femme fatale. Mantises are among the insects most commonly kept as pets.
